TSB: Porsche Jump Starting

This bulletin highlights the risks associated with using mobile 12V jump-start devices with Lithium-ion batteries on Porsche Taycan models from 2020 to 2022, emphasizing the potential for overcharge and fire hazards.

Key Highlights

  • Mobile 12V jump-start devices with Lithium-ion batteries can overcharge and pose fire risks when used on Porsche Taycan.
  • The device's internal contactor may disconnect after a jump if the vehicle's voltage exceeds a threshold, risking overcharge.
  • Owners are advised to use a donor vehicle with jump leads or external lead-acid AGM batteries for safe jump-starting.
  • Do not use Lithium-ion battery-based jump-start devices with the Porsche Taycan to prevent potential fire hazards.
  • Follow the workshop manual instructions for proper jump-start procedures to ensure safety.

Porsche Jump Starting

This bulletin applies to 2020-2022 Porsche Taycan vehicles. A mobile 12V jump-start device (booster/jump pack) has an internal contactor which isolates the device’s internal battery from the vehicle’s system after a jump start if the system voltage exceeds a certain value. The voltage of the vehicle’s 12V system may be lower than the cut-off voltage threshold of the device. This condition may lead to an overcharge of the device and risk of fire. Do not use mobile 12V jump start devices with Lithium-ion batteries! This could result in the device catching fire. For jump starting the vehicle either use a donor vehicle in combination with a jump lead as described in the workshop manual or an external lead-acid AGM battery.
