TSB: Subaru Strut Cap Update
Subaru has updated front strut caps part-numbered for certain vehicles (2017-2023 Impreza, 2018-2023 Crosstrek, 2019-2022 Forester, 2020-2023 Outback and Legacy, and 2019-2023 Ascent). The strut mount cap/seal shape has been changed (outside diameter increased by 30mm) and reinforced to provide improved sealing against water intrusion. If If prior water intrusion has resulted in surface rust on the upper mounts, this is cosmetic only and does not impair function, but it’s best to address this now to prevent further corrosion.
Remove the dust caps from the strut mounts. Using a wire brush followed by green 150-180 grit Scotchbrite, remove any rust accumulation. Use compressed air to blow off loose particles. Wipe the strut mount top plate with a mild solvent and allow to dry. Mask the area around the top portion of the strut mount and adjacent areas and apply multiple thin coats of rust-preventative paint such as Rustoleum Stops Rust spray enamel 7779830 or Krylon Tough Rust K09202007. Allow to dry. Remove masking and install new dust caps.
