On certain 2021-2022 Model S Palladium and Model X Palladium vehicles, the Plaid Rear Drive Unit (RDU) gearbox fluid volume may be between 2.5-4.5 liters due to a faulty gauge used in the factory fluid filling process.
Insufficient fluid may cause a reduction in vehicle performance and RDU longevity. Drain and inspect the Plaid RDU gearbox fluid. If contaminants/metal debris are found, Tesla says to “escalate the Toolbox session.” If no debris is found, refill the gearbox with new fluid.
After draining the fluid into a clean container, record the volume of gearbox fluid collected. Take photos of the fluid in the measuring container from the side and top. Use a flashlight and clean magnet pickup tool to check for metal contaminants. If contaminants are found, take photos of the contaminants. Upload all photos, recorded volume of fluid and description of the metal debris to the Toolbox session. Escalate the Toolbox session, wait for additional support and then close out the document using S022240003.
