TSB: Hyundai Brake Tips
Key Highlights
- Hyundai N vehicles use low steel brake pads and DOT4 brake fluid for enhanced performance during severe driving conditions.
- Normal brake noises like squealing at low speeds and groaning when releasing the brake pedal are typical and not indicative of a problem.
- Increased wear on pads and rotors is expected; regular inspections are recommended to maintain safety and performance.
- Temporary shallow grooves or scoring on rotors are normal; replace rotors if thickness falls below specified minimums.
- Brake dust accumulation requires regular cleaning of wheels to maintain brake efficiency and appearance.
Hyundai Brake Tips
Hyundai N vehicles such as the 2023 Veloster N, Elantra N, Ioniq 5 N and Kona N utilize low steel brake pads and DOT4 brake fluid. The brake system components were developed to maximize braking performance and fade resistance during severe driving conditions. As a result, these vehicles may exhibit different characteristics compared to conventional brakes.
The following conditions are considered normal:
- Squeal noise during low speed braking.
- Groan noise when slowly releasing the brake pedal after stopping.
- Pads and rotors may experience greater wear.
- Temporary shallow grooves or scoring around the brake rotor surface (if grooves or scoring results in a rotor below the minimum thickness specification, replace the rotor).
- The brake pads will create brake dust which will accumulate on the wheel surface, prompting regular cleaning.
