TSB: BMW Trunk Gremlins

BMW owners may experience the trunk/tailgate opening when the vehicle is locked, or while the vehicle is in motion, after coming to a stop.

The trunk/tailgate button on the key fob may have been accidentally depressed. Another possibility involves cables, adapters and/or other un-approved devices that are plugged into the 12V power socket and/or USB socket. Inspect for un-approved plug-ins. Also, perform a to-button logic conversion via ISTA.

Connect the vehicle to ISTA to perform the conversion opening of the tailgate only possible after unlocking.  After the conversion, explain to the customer that the two-button logic is only active once the setting for the trunk/tailgate is set in the head unit. First press the unlock button on the fob, then press the trunk/tailgate button on the fob. The trunk/tailgate no longer can be operated unless the vehicle is first unlocked.
