This bulletin applies to 2021 BMW 530i xDrive, M5, M8 7Series, 8 Series, 5 Series, X6 and X7 vehicles. A groaning noise may be heard during electronic steering column height adjustment. The spindle drive of the steering column may be out of adjustment. The spindle drive is located on the right side of the steering column as viewed from the driver’s seat.

    1. Remove the steering wheel.

    2. Remove the steering column shroud.

    3. The stop panel of the spindle drive will need to be turned 90 degrees clockwise. Before adjusting the stop spindle, the lock nut at the rear of the drive must be secured in place. Using a 13mm crow’s foot on the end of a long extension, secure the lock nut.

    4. With the rear lock nut secured, rotate the stop panel 90 degrees clockwise. If the noise is gone, reassemble. If the noise remains, replace the steering column.
