BMW Power Steering Failures

April 22, 2019
This bulletin applies to 2014 BMW 335i GT XDrive vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine. The power-assisted steering fails with a warning lamp in the instrument cluster or a check control message in the central information display. In some cases, the dynamic stability control warning lamp (DSC) may be illuminated.

Failure of the power-assisted steering may be caused by various software-related issues. The following codes may be stored in the fault memory of the electric power steering (EPS) module:

Scenario 1: 0x4823E1

Scenario 2: 0x4823CB / 0x4823CC

Scenario 3: 0x4823D2 and/or 0x4823EC

Scenario 4: 0x48239C (DSC warning lamp lights up)

Scenario 5: No communication with the EPS is possible (not accessible using diagnostics)

Scenario 6: 0x4823EE and 0x4823C2

Run diagnostics with the latest version of OSTA/D to read stored fault codes.

Scenario 1: Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.51.2 (target I-level F020-13-11-502) or a more recent version.

Scenario 2: Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.52.0 (target I-level F020-14-03-502) or a more recent version.

Scenario 3: Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.51.2 (target I-level F020-13-11-502) or a more recent version.

Scenario 4: For this fault code memory, the DSC warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster. The power-assisted steering is working, but the DSC is not fully functional (although ABS is still operational). Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.51.2 (target I-level F020-13-11-502) or a more recent version.

Scenario 5: The vehicle cannot communicate with the EPS (not accessible using diagnostics). Disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes and then reconnect it. The EPS is then accessible again. Then program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.52.0 (target I-level F020-14-03-502) or a more recent version.

Scenario 6: Perform the “Starting Steering” test plan (AT3244_EPS_ZF1_INBTR) from the Service Functions and then switch the ignition off and on again. Read the fault code memory again, and then clear it. Do not replace the EPS for this condition.
