Tech Tip: 3 ways to attract the next generation of professionals

March 10, 2022
Three tips to appeal to younger audiences and seasoned technicians alike.

The competition to attract the next generation of trade professionals is fierce, but the automotive industry can draw interest by appealing to what matters most to a younger generation, which has different values, work preferences, and is changing the workplace dynamic.

While some employers may see new preferences of the younger generation challenging to accommodate, automotive shops and dealerships have a lot to gain by attracting and retaining top talent.

Three tips to appeal to younger audiences and seasoned technicians alike:

  1. Demonstrate purpose. A company with a clear sense of purpose ignites the passion of its employees – especially younger technicians, who look for the “why” behind their work.
  2. Work smarter, not harder. People of all age groups would prefer to minimize time spent on routine maintenance. This can mean choosing products that are proven and effective. As an example, WD-40 Specialist Penetrant with EZ-Reach penetrates up to two times faster than the competition* and has a flexible straw that bends to keep its shape allowing users to get into hard-to-reach places without disassembling equipment.
  3. Continuously innovate. Younger age groups desire real change.
