A 2006 LR3 equipped with a ZF6HP26 transmission may come into the shop with the customer complaining that the gear selector lever has become hard to move. The transmission malfunction indicator lamp is illuminated and code retrieval indicates a code P0850 “Park/Neutral Switch Input Circuit Fault” stored in the TCM memory. The technician also notices that the “D” Indicator Lamp is flickering.

The selector lever cable pivot bushing inside the gear selector assembly wears causing the mechanism to bind up (Figures 1, 2 and 3). The bushing inside the gear selector assembly is not serviceable requiring the need to replace the assembly.

During the replacement process, be sure to check the connector plugging into the assembly looking for corrosion and clean if necessary (Figures 4, 5 and 6). A problem here will cause the “D” Indicator Lamp to flicker and set a P0850 code for a Park/Neutral Switch Input Circuit Fault.
