Tool trailer theft leaves auto body repair shop out $200,000 in tools

Keith Starling of KC Dent and his crew of eight had been working at Legends Toyota repairing hail-damaged cars when the padlock on the trailer was cut early in the morning.

A team of nine traveling auto body repair technicians, operating KC Dent in Kansas City, had their 24" tool trailer with over $200,000 of tools and $30,000 of computerized car keys stolen.

Keith Starling of KC Dent and his crew of eight had been working at Legends Toyota repairing hail-damaged cars when the padlock on the trailer was cut early in the morning.

Starling told Fox 4 News he and his crew often keep the keys to as many as 50 dealer cars when doing contracted work, which he estimates will cost around $30,000 to replace. He also said, on average, he is out $25,000 per technician in high-tech repair tools.

“You took the stuff that allows me to make money," he told Fox. "I can't even make money to get myself back out of it."

KCK Police Spokesperson Tom Tomasic told Fox his investigators are still searching for the trailer and its contents. He told Fox stolen trailers are often recovered, but the contents are much harder to locate.
