TSB: Pulsating Benz

On gasoline-powered Mercedes-Benz 167 series vehicles, a full fuel tank can cause a pulsating or clattering noise under the bench seat as purge airflow repeatedly opens and closes the fill limit vent valve.

Pulsating Benz

This bulletin applies to Mercedes-Benz 167 series vehicles equipped with gasoline engines. A pulsating/knocking/clattering noise may be heard from under the bench seat particularly when the fuel tank is full. The vibrating air column of the purge flow volume triggers the fill limit vent valve (FLVV) to open and close repeatedly when the fuel tank is full.

By slightly reducing the fuel quantity by around 5 liters (about 1.3 gallon), the noise cannot be heard. In isolated cases, the noise can also be amplified by a fuel tank installed too tightly, with the fuel lines above the fuel tank being too close to the body. To correct, loosen the fuel tank and reinstall it.
