If a groaning or screeching noise is present on a 2010 Volkswagen Passat, and the noise is heard at the transmission during high load clutch operation, the clutch hub springs may have broken down, causing a vibration through the pressure plate.

This concern can usually be duplicated under high loads. Start on a steep incline with low engine rpm.
