Some 2012 Ford Explorer vehicles equipped with a 2.0L gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engine and built on or before 8/17/2011 may exhibit a MIL on, with DTC P1289 (CHT – cylinder head temperature) sensor circuit high and/or P1290 CHT sensor circuit low stored in PCM memory.

1. Reprogram the PCM and transmission control module (TCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 74.05 and higher or 75.01 and higher.
2. Follow the service manual, section 307-01 General Procedures and perform Solenoid Body Strategy Drive Cycle.
Advise the customer that the vehicle is equipped with an adaptive transmission shift strategy which allows the vehicle’s computer to learn the transmission parameters to improve shift quality. The re-learning process may result in firmer-than-normal upshifts and downshifts for several days.
