This bulletin applies to 2014 BMW 328i models that display fault code 4823E1 in the EPS_20 control unit (electronic power steering fails when starting).

The electronic power steering (EPS) may fail briefly when starting the engine. The cause is a specific under-voltage situation during engine starting.

Run diagnostics with ISTA/D 2.36.0 or higher. Work through the appropriate test module ABL-DIT-AT3244_EPS_20_SG_X2, and program and code the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.48.1 or a more recent version. Continue with the recommendation in the test plan when programming is complete.
