How to Prevent A/C Compressor Failures with Proper Oil Management

Repeat A/C compressor failures usually aren't about the part — they're about the oil.

This Motor Age Tech Tip tackles a problem that plagues too many shops: repeat A/C compressor failures that get blamed on the part when the real culprit is oil. Techs shouldn't think of A/C compressor oil capacity as a fixed number for the part, but as a full system charge that must be measured, drained, and balanced every time. 

Noah Nelson walks through the PAG versus POE oil distinction, warning that selecting the wrong type on a hybrid EV compressor oil job can cause isolation faults in a high-voltage system. Viscosity grades matter too — 46, 100 and 150 aren't interchangeable, and PAG's hygroscopic nature means an open bottle can pull in moisture and brew acid inside a sealed system. 

For AC system oil charge accuracy, drain and measure the old compressor, check what the new one shipped with and flush the system for a clean baseline before refilling to OE spec. Priming the new compressor by hand before it ever runs prevents dry-starting.
