Honeywell Consumer Products Group (CPG) recently announced that it is expanding its training curriculum for 2008 to include 16 courses for professional technicians, service advisors and counter sales staff. "It's really important that we continue to educate the staff at today's repair shops and automotive aftermarket retail and wholesale locations," says Jay Buckley, technical training manager for Honeywell CPG and the Bendix Brakes Answerman. "Our success as a manufacturer is reliant on their ability to keep apprised of today's changing technology." The Autolite brand is introducing three new courses, including the "Ignition Systems Overview" to familiarize counter sales staff and service advisors with the various types of systems and components used in electronic ignitions over the last 25 years. Students will learn to identify ignition components and sensors and gain a better understanding of how they affect and control engine operation for conventional, ESC, waste spark and coil-on-plug systems. Trainers will review electronic circuit diagrams and introduce common no-start failures among different systems. "Modern Powertrain Mangement" will teach professional technicians how today's onboard microprocessors interact and control vehicle systems. The modern control module and data bus will be explored from OBDII?s inception of the SAEJ1850 protocol to today's HI speed CAN Bus serial network. The trainers will also review diagnostic trouble codes, no code failures and EPA readiness tests; sensors and their functions; as well as interaction with anti-theft, VAT and PassKey systems. The "Autolite Product Knowledge and Sales Skills" course is designed for counter personnel and service advisors, and focuses on the features and benefits of each product within the Autolite ignition family while covering the basics of spark plug heat range, the effects of improper spark plug gap and gap erosion and more. Other brands within Honeywell's CPG will also be introducing courses, including Prestone. These courses will cover passenger car coolant and cooling systems, heavy duty coolant and cooling systems and product knowledge and sales skills. FRAM is sponsoring courses on light-duty and commercial vehicle and heavy duty filtration, while Bendix is sponsoring a product knowledge and sales skill training course for counter and sales staff. Bendix also will sponsor courses for technicians, including several on automotive hydraulic brake diagnosis, SUV and light truck ABS, Delphi VI ABS and traction control, import braking systems, automotive brake electrical and electronics, selling strategies and the top 10 ways to reduce comebacks.
