Toyota to roll out 30 BEV models by 2030
Toyota Motor Corporation announced its goal to achieve global sales of 3.5 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) per year by 2030 at a media briefing at MEGA WEB in Tokyo. It was also reported that Lexus aims to have BEVs account for 100 percent of its vehicle sales in Europe, North America, and China by 2030, and to account for 100 percent of its sales globally starting in 2035.
"We need to reduce CO2 emissions as much as possible, as soon as possible," said President Akio Toyoda on stage at the event. "It is difficult to make everyone happy with a one-size-fits-all option. That is why Toyota wants to prepare as many options as possible for our customers around the world."
Toyota first presented their plans to expand their bZ (beyond Zero) series by introducing five new models.
5 new bZ models revealed -
- bZ4X - jointly developed with Subaru, launching next year
- Midsize SUV
- Compact SUV
- Midsize sedan
- Large SUV
"We will not only add battery EV options to existing vehicle models but will also offer a full lineup of reasonably priced mass-production models, such as the bZ series, to meet the needs of all kinds of customers," Toyoda said.
Toyota now offers more than 100 models of engine-only vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and fuel cell electric vehicles in more than 170 countries and regions. The Lexus brand now has more than 30 models of engine-only vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in more than 90 countries and regions.
Following the release of the new bZ models, Toyoda announced the company's goal to roll out 30 BEV models by 2030 and unveiled 11 more vehicles on stage.
One of which will be Lexus' first battery-driven EV, the RZ. The RZ's acceleration time is expected to be in the low 2 second range and have a cruising range of over 700km. Another vehicle in Lexus' future lineup will be a BEV sports car.
Although more specifics were not given, Toyoda said there will be "an EV for everyone".
"The future that we showed you today is by no means far away," he noted. "Most of the Toyota battery EVs that we introduced here are models that will be coming out in the next few years."
