What is the future of alternative fuel vehicles?

March 30, 2016
There are various reasons for development of alternative fuel vehicles, including environmental concerns, fuel efficiency standards and the leadership role of the automakers. The continued development of these vehicles hinges on further consumer acceptance and government legislation.

Aftermarket Business World columnist Larry Silvey examines the long-term acceptance and viability of alternative fuel vehicles, as well as their impact on parts distributors and the auto service repair industry in his column, “The future of alternative fuel vehicles.”

He cites several reasons for automakers investing billions in bringing the technology to fruition, including meeting CAFÉ requirements, environmental conscience, fulfilling market demand and to create a high-tech and environmentally conscious corporate image. There is a grain of truth in each of these reasons, as well as reasons to dispute each one.
