TSB: Subaru Cold Start Issues

Some 2019–2022 Subaru owners are finding their starter won't engage after a short drive in freezing temps. Frozen relay contacts are to blame, and Subaru's new ECM reprogramming files address it before it strands your customer.

Subaru Cold Start Issues

This bulletin applies to 2020-2022 Subaru Legacy/Outback 2.4L, 2019-2022 Ascent and 2022 WRX vehicles. Subaru offers new reprogramming files for the ECM. These files have been developed to address concerns of the starter motor not operating. While attempting a restart after a short drive cycle in low ambient temperatures of less than 32 degrees F, the starter motor may not operate. DTC P0890 (TCM power relay sense circuit low) will likely be stored in the ECM. Condensed moisture in the ignition relay can cause the contact points to freeze. The vehicle may also display an improper low engine oil warning lamp illumination. The new logic enhances the relay self-shutdown program, eliminating the possibility of frozen relay contacts.
