Mazda pop

June 12, 2012
Some 2008 to 2010 Mazda Tributes and Tribute Hybrids built on or before June 11, 2010, may exhibit a pop or clunk noise from the steering column area while turning. This noise typically occurs a quarter-turn before the steering wheel reaches its end of travel stop and typically goes away with the weight off the wheels.

Verify that the noise is coming from the steering column and/or steering shaft area and occurs before the steering wheel reaches full-stop. NOTE: If the noise is only present when the steering wheel contacts the end of travel stop, this is normal and this bulletin does not apply. If the noise is present before or between steering wheel travels stops, you must replace both the steering shaft and steering shaft coupling U-joints.

Torque the steering column coupling-to-steering column shaft bolt to 52 ft.-lbs. (70 Nm).

Follow service manual procedures to perform steering wheel position sensor calibration once the repair has been completed. Failure to calibrate may result in steering column noise during turns.
