Strengthen your relationship with truck drivers

Dec. 15, 2011
Let them know about the latest DOT ruling

Want an easy way to help solidify a strong relationship with truckers?

Help them keep money in their pocket and avoid losing their commercial driver’s license (CDL).

Make sure they are aware that effective January 3, 2012, it is illegal to use hand-held mobile phone while operating a commercial truck or bus.

This regulation from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is the latest action by the U.S. Department of Transportation to end distracted driving.

Here are some important elements of the regulation:

- Drivers who violate the restriction will face federal civil penalties of up to $2,750 for each offense, and can be disqualified from operating a commercial motor vehicle for multiple offenses.

- States will suspend an individual’s CDL after two or more serious traffic violations.

- Commercial truck and bus companies that allow their drivers to use hand-held cell phones while driving will face a maximum penalty of $11,000.

- There is a limited exception to the regulation that allows CMV drivers to use their hand-held mobile telephones, if necessary, to communicate with law enforcement officials or other emergency services.
