Attendees of Automechanika Chicago’s Friday morning training session had almost two dozen great trainers to choose from. A lucky few made the wise decision to attend Donny Seyfer’s class, “Hot Heads – Advanced Cooling System Service and Repair.”

Seyfer is a well-respected instructor and shop owner who hails from Wheat Ridge, Colo. He is an active industry advocate, serving on the boards of both NATEF and NASTF and is the chairman-elect of the Automotive Service Association (ASA). With more than 35 years in the industry, Seyfer has conducted customized training that serves shop owners and technicians alike.

Seyfer tells us he’s presented this course more than 30 times, with several students attending more than once to get the benefit of the continuous updates he incorporates into the material. Attendees of the Automechanika Chicago version were shown, through technical description and case study examples, that manufacturers are maintaining tighter control of an engine’s operating temperature and thermal efficiency. When applied to component knowledge most attendees already had, it became easier for all to understand how these components have evolved and really how little actual information related to their care currently is available.

Seyfer is an energetic and engaging speaker that kept the students present attentive to his message.

“There are considerable income opportunities (in the service and repair of these systems) that most shops are leaving on the table,” Seyfer shares. “Customers are willing and even happy to buy these additional services when the shop can explain the benefits and the ‘why.’”

After attending his Automechanika session, this year’s flock of students will return home able to do just that.
