Fixing the Ford/Mazda 2-3 flare

Feb. 2, 2015
This newsletter addresses a common problem with a 2-3 flare which is also related to the operation of the band.

In a previous newsletter the cause of 1-2 and 3-4 shift issues was discussed with Ford and Mazda’s 4 and 5 speed front wheel drive transmissions. The OD (2/4) band anchor pin is selective and is available in seven different lengths. An RE4R01A band adjustment stud or Superior’s adjuster stud were other alternatives to adjusting the band eliminating the 1-2 and 3-4 shift problem.

This newsletter addresses a common problem with a 2-3 flare which is also related to the operation of the band. In this case (no pun intended), the servo pin (figure 1) wears the bore (figure 2) allowing 3rd gear oil which is used to release the band to leak past the pin. This causes a drop in pressure going to the 3-4 clutches. The result is a flared 2-3 shift.

To correct this condition, Northland Transmission Service makes a servo bore repair kit that will allow you to ream and re-sleeve the servo bore (figure 3 – Master Blue kit shown). It is a Ford authorized repair and is available through Rotunda. This can be an in-car repair. The valve body will need to be removed as well as the manual lever rod to gain access to the servo covered by a 3 bolt plate (figure 4).
