Ask the expert: Why is there white smoke coming from my tailpipe?

April 29, 2020
A problem with the head gasket, which is located between the cylinder head and engine to protect the cylinders from coolant or engine oil leaks and ensure maximum compression, could cause the white smoke.

Question: Why is there white smoke coming from my tailpipe?

Answer:

Mark came to his local auto parts store because his 1987 Mercury was blowing white smoke out of the tailpipe and overheating. Jack gave him some advice on what the problem could be and how to fix it.

Jack: It could be a head gasket problem. The head gasket is located between the cylinder head and engine to protect the cylinders from coolant or engine oil leaks and ensure maximum compression. It's pretty important.

Mark: That sounds serious. Is it dangerous to drive the car?

Jack: Driving with a blown head gasket can be unsafe and will definitely cause serious vehicle damage. You should get this taken care of quickly.

Mark: Ugh, I don't want to put any more money in this old car.

Jack: Let's save you some cash and try a chemical solution first. Do you have time to drain the cooling system when you get home?

Mark: I don't want to mess with draining fluids -- do you have something I can install right now?

Jack: Of course, how long does it take your car to start overheating?

Mark: Hmm, I'd say about 15 minutes.

Jack: Ok, I recommend Bar's Leaks Professional Carbon Fiber Blown Head Gasket Repair. It's anti-freeze compatible solution stops all head gasket coolant problems, including sealing warped and cracked heads, stopping overheating and fixing intake gasket leaks.
