For mobile mechanics, running a business can be just as demanding as repairing vehicles. They often serve as their own service advisor, parts specialist, and technician. To make matters even more challenging, most existing shop management platforms don't address all the needs of a mobile mechanic. This gap in the industry for mobile mechanics is what led to the creation of the National Wrench Index Suite.
“I got tired of having no diagnostic tools built for mobile mechanics—everything on the market was designed for shops with four walls, not technicians working out of a van or truck,” said Brock Fleeman, creator and founder of the National Wrench Index.
Drawing on firsthand experience, Fleeman created the National Wrench Index Suite—a platform built specifically for solo mobile mechanics that combines customer management, diagnostics, scheduling, business analytics, and reputation management into a single mobile-friendly solution. “National Wrench Index Suite covers everything from AI-assisted alarm code diagnostics for Thermo King and Carrier reefer units—verified from my own field experience—to scheduling, invoicing, a voice AI receptionist that books calls while techs are under the hood, and a hardware temperature and GPS tracker I built from scratch for fleet monitoring.”
In this Q&A with Motor Age, Fleeman discusses his journey from technician to software developer, the inspiration behind the National Wrench Index, and how the platform is helping independent mobile mechanics streamline their operations and grow their businesses.
Tell us about your background as a technician.
Brock Fleeman: I have been a technician since 2003. I started working on reefer units in the transport refrigeration industry and stepped out on my own 17 years ago, and I've been a mobile mechanic ever since.
What is the National Wrench Index?
Fleeman: The National Wrench Index is the only complete business platform built specifically for solo mobile mechanics. It helps them to book jobs, quote customers, answer calls, and collect reviews from their phone.
Why was it created?
Fleeman: Early in my career, I noticed a lot of mobile mechanics were advertising their business on social media but weren't getting clientele. In the reverse, I noticed that customers who were looking for mobile mechanics were being scammed by a lot of bots. So, I put together a directory just for mobile mechanics to give the industry one vetted, validated place for them to be found.
In December of 2025, I began building the mobile mechanic directory portion of the National Wrench Index and launched that in February 2026.
After launching the National Wrench Index directory, I started working on the management platform, a need that I identified back in 2016.
I've always used a shop software platform for my business, but I had to adapt and tailor it to fit my needs. It left a lot to be desired, and it was expensive. Especially because there were a lot of things I didn't use on a daily basis.
After identifying that I needed a different type of platform for my mobile mechanic business, I started taking notes about what that platform might look like. Unfortunately, I've always been busy as a mobile mechanic, and I didn't really have the time or the funds to build the ideal mobile mechanic platform.
After taking the time to produce the National Wrench Index directory, I set aside time to build the management and diagnostic portion of the National Wrench Index and, on April 16, 2026, launched it.
In your own words, can you break down the different features of the National Wrench Index?
Fleeman:
Foreman: This feature answers your calls, schedules appointments right onto your calendar, and summarizes everything that was discussed in the call.
Quick Wrench: This feature allows the mechanic to scan the vehicle identification number (VIN) with their phone or tablet and will give the full VIN breakdown for that vehicle. Additionally, when the mechanic gets the diagnostic trouble code (DTC), they can log it in QuickWrench, and it will give them the most likely cost of acceptance. It breaks down labor time, part numbers, and everything they're going to need to complete that job.
Torque Wrench: This feature will automatically send a Google review request to the customer within five minutes after the mechanic is paid. This gives the customer the ability to leave the mechanic a Google review and boost their Google rating.
Intel Hub: This feature helps the mechanic build their whole business. It keeps a history of all their customers' vehicles and supplies their VIN numbers, service history, and next due repairs. It alerts the mechanic if a customer has something coming up that needs to be addressed, and then it breaks down the mechanics' financials per job, per month, per week.
What have customers been saying about the National Wrench Index Suite?
Fleeman: Our users say it's super seamless and easy to use. They say it is a great tool. People are happy using it, and anybody who has any questions or wants to see something different, I always respond within four hours and fix or tailor the platform to fit their specific need.
