R-444A: A Direct Replacement for R-1234yf

Designed using familiar refrigerant components, R-444A provides a cost-competitive, environmentally friendly solution.

As the automotive service industry faces rising costs, supply constraints, and stricter environmental requirements, technicians are asking: Is there a realistic replacement to R-1234yf that works in today's systems without significant system changes or ways of working? Finally, the answer is yes: Orbia's R-444A.

Developed using commercially available HFO and HFC components, R-444A is intentionally formulated to be a direct replacement for R-1234yf while performing like R-134a. Technicians can use standard YF procedures and equipment, recharge with similar charge amounts, and use them in existing systems (compressors and heat exchangers).

The top priority for most shops is customer satisfaction. The improved cooling capacity of R-444A means that the customer's AC system will deliver cold air faster to the cabin, enabling enhanced customer comfort and satisfaction, promoting repeat business.

Shops also raise concerns about cost. R-444A offers a cost-competitive alternative to R-1234yf. It is a blend made from well-established refrigerant components produced by multiple manufacturers, providing supply chain flexibility and a different cost structure.

R-444A improves both cooling capacity and energy efficiency, reducing compressor power that can translate into an improved fuel economy. This improved efficiency may also extend the driving range of EVs and vehicles with heat pump systems. From a service standpoint, R-444A fits into existing R-1234yf workflows. Technicians recover the original refrigerant, evacuate the system, leak check under pressure, and recharge with a similar charge amount. Current PAG or POE oils used with R-1234yf are fully compatible, and oil circulation is actually improved due to overall better solubility and miscibility. Better oil return supports compressor durability and long-term system reliability, adding value for both shops and customers.

Leak detection and diagnostics also remain unchanged. Standard SAE J2913 leak detectors, currently used with R-1234yf, can be used with R-444A. UV dyes approved for YF systems are likewise compatible. Operating pressures are very similar to YF, with only marginal differences that fall well within existing service expectations.

Environmental performance is another area where R-444A addresses growing concerns. With a GWP under 150, R-444A meets current regulatory targets while delivering higher system performance and lower lifecycle carbon emissions than R-1234yf.

It's important to note that "direct replacement" does not mean "top off" of an existing R-1234yf system. Proper recovery of R-1234yf is required as mixing refrigerant in the system is not recommended. Recovery machines must be dedicated and clearly labeled when handling multiple refrigerants, and SAE is actively finalizing standards for port adaptors and other handling requirements. Like R-1234yf, R-444A is classified as A2L (mildly flammable), so existing safety practices apply.

For shops looking ahead, R-444A offers a rare combination for differentiated service: lower cost*, better performance, no issues with polymerization, and compatibility compared with today's R-1234yf equipment. These benefits make the adoption of R-444A a logical conclusion, as it creates happier customers while building trust. Orbia's R-444A is the ideal replacement for R-1234yf that can keep customers happy and improve the bottom line.

Disclaimer: R-444A is provisionally available pending final federal action under section 612 of the Clean Air Act. R-444A currently has limited provisional authorization for professional servicing, with DIY authorization pending. EPA has proposed under SNAP Rule 27 to list R-444A as acceptable, subject to use conditions, for MVAC professional and DIY servicing, with final action expected by mid-2026. Use conditions and other restrictions apply.
