Shasten Tomas discovered his calling early through museum visits, and now he's channeling that childhood fascination into mastering the complex world of aircraft engine maintenance at Georgia Northwestern Technical College.


Vehicle Service Pros is partnering with TechForce Foundation to share profiles and perspectives of young automotive technicians who are in the early days of their careers. These students were asked: "What is one skill you would like to master?"


"My passion for aviation began early, ignited by the awe-inspiring displays of airplanes and rockets at a local museum. The sheer power and complexity of these machines, particularly their engines, captivated me," Tomas says.

"I dreamt of understanding the intricate workings of these marvels, a dream that fuels my desire to master the challenging field of engine, turbine, and rotary equipment maintenance and repair.

"Working on engines requires meticulous attention to detail and exceptional manual dexterity. From replacing worn components to conducting intricate balancing procedures, every action must be performed with precision and accuracy to ensure the safety and reliability of the aircraft.

"The aviation industry is constantly evolving, with advancements in engine design, materials, and maintenance techniques. I am excited by the prospect of staying at the forefront of technological advancements in aviation and contributing to the development of innovative solutions.

"Finally, and most importantly, it would empower me to contribute to aviation safety. By mastering engine, turbine, and rotary equipment maintenance, I would play a critical role in ensuring the airworthiness of aircraft, contributing to the safety of passengers, crew, and the public.

"Mastering engine, turbine, and rotary equipment maintenance would not only advance my career as an aviation technician but also provide me with a profound sense of accomplishment and contribute to the continued advancement of aviation."
