Hyundai is recalling almost 600,000 vehicles in the U.S. to fix hood latch and parking brake warning light problems.

2013-17 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport Recall

Hyundai Motor America is recalling more than 437,000 Santa Fe vehicles in the U.S. to fix a hood latch that could unexpectedly open while driving.

Vehicles affected include Model Year 2013 to 2017 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport vehicles.

The secondary hood latch cable has the potential to corrode and bind, according to the recall document provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which can cause the secondary hood latch to remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

2015-16 Hyundai Genesis and Sonata Recall

Hyundai also has a second recall out for 161,000 Model Year 2015 and 2016 Genesis and Sonata vehicles for a parking brake warning light malfunction.

Corrosion of the parking brake switch contacts may intermittently not allow the warning light that shows that the parking brake is engaged to illuminate, which may result in a driver operating the vehicles with the brake partially engaged. Although, Hyundai is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.

Warning signs of this occurring include:

1. Effect on vehicle acceleration

2. Parking brake noise

3. Parking brake “drag”

4. Smoke and/or smell from driving with applied parking brake

According to the recall document provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Model Year 2015 through 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedans equipped with a manual parking brake produced at Hyundai Motor Company beginning on November 20, 2013 through February 25, 2015 are affected.

Model Year 2015 and 2016 Hyundai Sonata sedans equipped with a manual parking brake produced at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama beginning on April 25, 2014 through March 03, 2015 are affected.

Starting June 30, dealers will replace the latch cable and parking brake switch to applicable vehicles free of charge.

Owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov for more information on recalls.
