Why ignition coils fail

Ignition coils operate in a tough environment. Stresses created by vibration, temperature changes, and even the failure of spark plugs and other components can cause ignition coil wiring to break or short out. The insulation inside the ignition coil can also fail, causing energy to escape.

Delphi has been a leading manufacturer of OE ignition components for more than a century. Today, the company manufactures more than 23 million each year. The company’s all-makes ignition coil product offering includes more than 230 SKUs covering 95% of North American vehicles in operation.

Delphi said its ignition coils are made with application-specific materials that meet each engine’s unique performance requirements, down to the small details. The company selects epoxy formations to balance the high temperature and thermal shock demands that ignition coils encounter. It also uses both high-grade silicon steel and a composite material in the lamination stack for a more effective heat transfer directly to the core. This minimizes energy losses and increases the lifespan the part. The company said its stainless steel spark plug spring avoids corrosion and radio interference.
