A study from Zutobi ranked the best states for EV ownership . It looked at charging station incentives, the cost to charge a Tesla Model 3 (Model X is pictured), and the proportion of electric vehicles in each US state.
Are you wondering how your state stacks up against the others for being EV-friendly? A recent study found that Washington is the best state in which to own an EV and Alaska is the worst. The study from Zutobi looked at charging station incentives, the cost to charge a Tesla Model 3, and the proportion of electric vehicles in each US state to reveal the best states for EV ownership.
Best states for EV ownership
The study found the best state to own an EV is Washington, with a total score of 8.37/10. The Evergreen State ranks in the top three for its proportion of EVs and the top 10 for both charging station incentives and the cost to charge a Tesla Model 3.
Next is Oregon, with a score of 7.55/10. With a high proportion of EVs, it placed in the top five. It is also one of the top 20 cheapest states to fully charge a Tesla Model 3.
Texas takes third place in the index, with a score of 7.14/10. It ranks in the top 10 for both the highest purchase incentives and lowest cost to fully charge the world’s most popular electric car. Texas also ranks in the top 20 for its proportion of electric vehicles, at 0.23 percent of its fleet.
Worst states for EV ownership
Alaska is the worst state in which to own an EV, with a total score of 1.16/10. It has some of the lowest numbers of EVs in the country and one of the highest costs to fully charge a Tesla Model 3.
Other study takeaways:
• California has the highest proportion of EVs, with more than 400,000 EVs registered in the state in 2020.
• South Dakota has the lowest number of electric vehicles out of all states, with only 410 vehicles are registered in the state.
• Louisiana is the cheapest state for charging an EV. Thanks to it having some of the cheapest electricity tariffs in the country, it costs only $3.76 to fully charge a Tesla Model 3.
• California and Indiana have the best charging station initiatives and offer motorists a rebate of $2,500 to install a charging station.
