Aging USPS delivery vehicles causing fire concerns

Jan. 21, 2020
As these vehicles are aging, the risk of catching fire increases.

The National Association of Letter Carriers has been researching a fire concern with the aging postal carrier trucks – trucks have caught without being in kind of accident. According to union memos and letters, many of these vehicles have been in service for over 25 years, and as the vehicles age, the fire risks increase. It is believed the fires may be caused by faulty fuel and brake lines.

U.S Postal Service spokesperson, Kim Frum issued a statement saying, “…the Postal Service has implemented mandated maintenance schedules and fine-tune repair and maintenance procedures for the existing Postal Service vehicle fleet…”

Additionally, Frum stated the USPS is choosing a new delivery vehicle in place on the aging vehicles, which will be known as the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle. The postal service expects a contract(s) for production to be made sometime in the summer of 2020.
