Completely user-configurable system handles testing issues unique to hybrid/electric vehicles.

SAKOR Technologies, Inc., a leader in engine and powertrain testing, announced the availability of its new Hybrid Vehicle Test System, designed for testing a complete hybrid/electric vehicle (HEV) driveline, or any vehicle sub-system, including complete emissions testing. The system can run a wide variety of road load profiles and simulations, and is designed for testing to all international standards, including existing and proposed EPA, CARB, and Euro standards.

The new Hybrid Vehicle Test System is completely user-configurable, and features a system architecture that allows it to be adapted for research and development, performance evaluation and durability testing of high power electric motors and inverters, high voltage batteries and battery management systems, transmissions and mechanical components, as well as complete power train and emissions testing.

"SAKOR's HEV test system is specifically designed to accommodate the differences in testing hybrid and electric drivetrains compared to standard testing of internal combustion (IC) systems," said Randal Beattie, President of Okemos, Michigan based SAKOR Technologies, Inc. The system includes special considerations that account for the use of regenerative braking for energy recapture, the high harmonic content generated by modern inverters, and the need for high power density to get the maximum power from the smallest size and weight.

"We handle these issues by combining our core capabilities into a single hybrid vehicle test system," said Beattie. This system combines a High Voltage Battery Simulator, one or more AccuDyne AC motoring dynamometers, and a DynoLAB EM, SAKOR's modular data acquisition and control system.

The AccuDyne AC dynamometers are direct drive solutions, eliminating the need for gearboxes and the problems of backlash, windup, and reflected inertia. The power analyzers are designed to work with high harmonic content, and the High Voltage Battery Simulator delivers precise, repeatable performance, independent of battery charge state.
