Sales tip: Make a big merchandising impact in a small space

Although a tool truck is pretty small compared to a retail store, there are ways to show off products.

Just because you have a small space doesn’t mean you can’t make a big impact.

Little changes can make a big difference. Over time, after seeing your truck day-in and day-out you can become blind to what needs to be freshened up. Here are a few ideas for updates:

Light-it-up - Older fluorescent bulbs have an off-color light. The light affects the way everything on your truck looks. Invest in new daylight fluorescent tubes and replace ballasts as needed. Also consider adding undershelf and LED puck lights to brighten up dark areas and corners.

Tidy-it-up - Nothing screams old inventory more than dust. No one wants to pay full price for what looks like outdated tools. Take time every week to dust, sweep and use some soap and water once in a while. Or hire someone to do if for you.

Spruce-it-Up - Replace ragged old signs and shelf talkers with new ones. Repair or replace broken store fixtures. Dump old literature. Organize your desk area.

Change-it-up - Rotate inventory. You’ll be surprised how many people will see a tool they never knew you carried after you change up your stock. I call it “male pattern blindness” where a technician doesn’t see the object right in front of them (like a jar of pickles in the fridge).

Shake-it-up - Rotate in non-tools like snacks, toys, electronics and seasonal tools for the home. The most profitable tool dealers don’t just sell tools.

Borrow a fresh set of eyes to help you identify areas for improvement on your truck. Maybe your DM or another dealer can give some insights on ways to improve your layout or displays.

Bottom line: store appearance makes a difference.
