Dec. 4, 2015
The Al Skin Zipper crimps the edge tightly for a professional rope hem finish with no damage to the skin in a two-step process after removing the self-piercing rivets.

The Steck Manufacturing Al Skin Zipper works on any 1mm aluminum skin and 1.5mm door shell. The air-hammer-driven tool skins doors in approximately 15 minutes using a self-lubricating, reinforced nylon head, which crimps regular or adhesive-bonded skins. According to the company, the Al Skin Zipper crimps the edge tightly for a professional rope hem finish with no damage to the skin in a two-step process after removing the self-piercing rivets.

Application

These tools work in conjunction with Steck Manufacturing's SPR Extraction Tool, No. 21970, and SPR Insertion Tool, No. 21960. They allow the technician to complete the door skin process and build his/her resume for aluminum repair.

Selling points

  • When skinning aluminum doors and working on non-structure quarter panels, technicians not only require the removal and installation of SPRs (self-piercing rivets) but also replacing the aluminum skin with a rope hem as part of the repair.
  • Aluminum skins are prone to cracking, but the Al Skin Zipper and Al Skin Zipper2 prevent cracking from happening because it produces a rope hem.
  • The Al Skin Zipper is an air hammer-driven door skinning tool for any 1mm aluminum skin and 1.5mm door shell, and it is easily affordable for every auto body technician.
  • Al Skin Zipper2 is an air hammer-driven door skinning tool for the window flange opening.

Features and benefits

These two new tools saves the technician arm fatigue and up to 30 minutes of labor and assembly time by easily skinning the door with minimal refinish required to paint and/or reapply e-coating. They skin the door before the two-part bonding agent has time to set.

Origin

Working with Ford, Steck Manufacturing found the need to have a technician solution to install and replace aluminum door skins as part of the door repair processes.

Manufacturing specs

Made in the U.S.A., these two tools are made from self-lubricating reinforced Nylon head.
