NHTSA launches the new SaferCar app

Sept. 2, 2020
NHTSA has launched the new SaferCar smartphone app.
As a highway traffic safety professional, keeping the driving public safe is your primary mission. Here at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, we share that same mission, and one of the primary ways we fulfill that is by managing vehicle and vehicle equipment safety recalls.

When a safety recall is issued, it's vital that we immediately notify the affected drivers and help find out how to get the recall quickly fixed for free. To help in these efforts, NHTSA has launched the new SaferCar smartphone app.

Here's how it works:

  1. After downloading the app, a user simply adds their vehicle to the virtual garage and enters the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  2. The user can also enter any additional equipment — like car seats, tires or trailers — then opt in for notifications
  3. When a new safety recall is discovered for the vehicle or equipment entered in the app, SaferCar will alert the user
  4. App users can also access our online tools, such as NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings, car seat finder and car seat inspection locator.
