Advancing automotive technology often has caused futurists to predict the demise of the automotive do-it-yourself market segment. That was the case with the advent of computer chips to replace mechanical parts and with anti-lock brakes.

Now that technology offers lane departure warning systems and other advanced driver assistance systems, those dire predictions are being made again.
