The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently distributed a notice informing the public of its plans to study and evaluate forward collision avoidance and mitigation (FCAM) technology.
NHTSA has looked into the technology for a number of years, including forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking systems. However, their efforts to evaluate the real-world performance of this technology will continue with track testing and field operational testing.
A number of different terms are used by industry and regulators for FCAM technology, including forward collision warning (FCW), crash imminent braking (CIB), dynamic brake support (DBS), automatic emergency braking (AEB),and collision mitigation braking (CMB).
The trucking industry is currently developing next-generation automatic emergency braking systems with the goal of improved performance and safety for the driver.
