BMW vehicles equipped with a rain sensor, integrated automatic heating/air conditioning system and head-up display may have a perceived issue with the rain/light sensor (RLS).

Oil may leak from this sensor. The oil serves as a separation medium between the RLS mounting gel pad and the windscreen. Note: the separating oil usually leaks only once from the pad at the RLS. According to BMW, this small oil leak does not impair the function of the RLS.

1. Expose the RLS

2. Disassemble the mirror end caps and/or the interior mirror according to repair instruction 51 16 063 “Disassemble and install interior mirror.”

3. Clean the area around the RLS and any contaminated components (windscreen, mirror, end caps)

4. Reinstall all removed components.
