Durango Smokes In Certain Conditions

Some 2011-2014 Dodge Durango vehicles equipped with a 5.7L engine and built on or before Oct. 1, 2013, may experience blue smoke from the exhaust tailpipe when the engine is initially started after an extended cold soak period and with the vehicle parked facing uphill on a significant incline.

This condition is typically the result of oil pull-over on the rear cylinder walls. A revised engine oil pan incorporates an improved windage tray/oil scraper that helps to reduce this condition. The associated PCM software update incorporates a reduced engine vacuum feature that is enabled under these conditions, which lessens the effect of oil pull-over.

Using a scan tool (wiTECH) with the appropriate diagnostic procedures in TechCONNECT, first verify that all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTCs are present, record them and repair as needed before proceeding further.

1. Replace the engine oil pan with revised P/N 68207352AA. If the vehicle is model year 2011, no further repairs should be needed. If not 2011, proceed to the next step.
2. Reprogram the PCM with the latest software. help using the wiTECH application for flashing control modules is available through the wiTECH diagnostic application. Select the “HELP” tab on the wiTECH window, the “HELP CONTENTS”. This will open the Welcome to wiTECH Help screen, where topics can be selected. After reprogramming, clear any DTCs that might have set during the process.
