Some 2010-2012 Mazda3 vehicles equipped with 17-inch wheels and VINs lower than JM1BL*****622215 produced before March 1, 2012, may exhibit a creaking noise from the rear shock absorber(s) when passing over a bump or turning at 6 mph to 12 mph.

The creaking may be a stick/slip noise occurring between the bound stopper and the rod of the rear shock(s). The correct this problem, grease is applied at the inner surface of the bound stopper.

With the rear wheels removed, slide the dust cover down from the bound stopper. Pack Mazda Silicone Brake Grease into the clearance gap around the lower end of the bound stopper and apply grease to the shock’s rod, above the dust cover. Slide the dust cover back onto the bound stopper, reinstall the wheels and verify the repair.
