This bulletin applies to certain Hyundai vehicles where one or more of the following automatic transaxle DTCs are stored:

P0731……..1st gear incorrect ratio……..clutch slippage in 1st gear more than 200 rpm

P0732……..2nd gear incorrect ratio…….clutch slippage in 2nd gear more than 200 rpm

P0733……..3rd gear incorrect ratio…….clutch slippage in 3rd gear more than 200 rpm

P0734……..4th gear incorrect ratio…….clutch slippage in 4th gear more than 200 rpm

P0735……..5th gear incorrect ratio…….clutch slippage in 5th gear more than 200 rpm

P0736…….Reverse gear incorrect ratio…reverse gear slippage more than 200 rpm

Record customer comments. Delete the DTC(s). Perform the following tests, and then follow the repair procedure shown below.

  • Attach the A/T Tester and place the transaxle shift lever to “D.”
  • Move the gear selector switch of the A/T Tester to 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (if equipped) and perform a stall test in each gear.
  • Use EF XG knob for 1999 and later Sonata, 2001 and later Elantra, Sante Fe XG and 2003 and later Tiburon.
  • Use LC knob for 1999 and later Accent, 1999-2000 Elantra and 1999-2002 Tiburon.
  • Refer to the appropriate shop manual for stall test specifications.
  • Disconnect the A/T tester. Delete any solenoid DTC induced by the A/T tester.
  • Test drive the vehicle for two key-on to key-off driving cycles when the ATF is hot (above 158 degrees Fahrenheit). Drive the vehicle under similar conditions as reported by the customer. Perform several 1-2-3-4 upshifts an 4-3-2-1 downshifts.
  • If the issue is not resolved, replace the transaxle.
