This bulletin applies to all Subaru models equipped with a 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 and 2.5L EJ engine, regarding diagnosis of oil seepage from the automatic timing belt tension adjuster.

During inspection, the tension adjuster must always be compressed slowly and with the rod in a vertical position. Compressing the adjuster too quickly (too much applied force) or horizontally may result in weakening or damage to the tensioner.

During inspection, no oil should be seen past the rod seal other than a slight amount of residual seepage. If a significant amount of oil leaks past the rod seal, the adjuster must be replaced.
