Front wheel spindle inspection should be performed on 2009 Ford Ranger 4x2 vehicles. The inspection involves locating and identifying the spindle batch code and date code on the inboard side of each of the front wheel spindles.
Step 1: Make sure that the steering column is unlocked to allow front wheel side-to-side movement. Move the front wheels slowly to avoid aeration in the power steering system. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist.
Step 2: Turn the front wheels to permit a clear visual inspection of the inner spindle area on both RH and LH front wheel spindles. Note the batch code and date code on each spindle.
If the batch code is “V8,” replace the front wheel spindle.
If the batch code is “TR,” and the 3rd character of the date code is “2,” replace the front wheel spindle.
If the batch code is “TR” and the 3rd character of the date code is unreadable, replace the front wheel spindle.
NOTE: The 3rd character of a TR spindle will either be a 1 or 2. Spindles with “TR1” do not require replacement. Spindles with a batch code other than V8 or TR do not require replacement.
Step 3: If the front wheel spindle date code is not clear or visible on a TR spindle, fill the character stamping with white or yellow touch-up paint to improve visibility.
Apply a layer of white or yellow touch-up paint over the date code. Using your finger, remove the excess paint. Do not use a shop towel. The towel will remove too much of the paint.
If the front wheel spindles require replacement, refer to the workshop manual, Section 204-01 Wheel Spindle Removal and Installation.
Check the wheel alignment and adjust front toe if necessary. The replacement of a front wheel spindle should not affect the front camber/caster angles.
