This applies to 2009-2010 Mazda Tribute vehicles equipped with automatic transmission and built on or before Nov. 25, 2009. Some vehicles may exhibit diagnostic trouble codes P0720 or P0722 and harsh engagement or shifts or starts in 5th gear from a stop.
These conditions may be caused by an open circuit in the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor or the solenoid body lead frame. These DTCs indicate insufficient input from the OSS sensor.
1. Verify the customer concern.
2. Check the condition of the transmission fluid. If the fluid does not smell burnt, continue to Step 3 and follow the repair procedure to diagnose the OSS circuit. If the fluid does smell burnt, follow normal MS3 online instructions or workshop manual for diagnosis and repair.
3. Follow PINPOINT TEST 3: OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR on MS3 or the workshop manual section 05-01. If instructed to replace the OSS sensor in PPT, proceed to Step 4. If the PPT does not lead to replacing the OSS, this procedure does not apply. Proceed with normal diagnostics.
4. Check the build date on the solenoid body lead frame. The solenoid body lead frame build date is a Julian date – the first two numbers are the year (09) and the next three numbers are the day of the year. If the build date matches one from the table, check the condition of the transmission fluid anf replace the solenoid body lead frame and the OSS sensor. Note: When replacing the solenoid body lead frame, inspect the build date on the new part. Do not use a solenoid body lead frame with a build date listed in the table. If the solenoid body lead frame build date does not match one from the table, only replace the OSS sensor.
