They help protect tires and rims from unnecessary wear and save valuable time and effort. A tire changer is a specialized tool designed to remove and install tires on wheels with accuracy and ease. It securely holds the wheel in place and uses mechanical components to handle the tire, minimizing manual labor and reducing the risk of rim or wheel damage.

Operating a tire machine with care and precision is essential for a safe and efficient process. The following six-step guide outlines how to properly use a tire changer.

  • Step 1: Prepare the tire and rim
    • Begin by thoroughly cleaning the tire and rim to remove dirt, debris, or stuck materials. Inspect carefully for visible damage, such as rim cracks or tire punctures.
  • Step 2: Break the bead 
    • Remove the valve stem core to release the air. Position the tire and wheel assembly vertically between the tire changer housing and the side shovel (bead breaker).
    • Activate the bead breaker and apply pressure until the bead separates from the rim.
    • Rotate the assembly to the 6 o’clock position and repeat. Perform the same procedure on the inner bead.
  • Step 3: Position the tire on the machine
    • Place the wheel on the tire changer’s turntable, ensuring it is properly centered. Use the clamps to secure the wheel in place.
  • Step 4: Remove the tire
    • Engage the mount/demount head to the edge of the rim and lock it in place. The locking mechanism will automatically set a small clearance between the rim and the demount head.
  • Step 5: Install the new tire
    • Rotate the TPMS to a position approximately 180 degrees away, as this prevents damage to the TPMS sensor from the mount/demount head. Lubricate both beads of the tire.
    • Position the lower bead onto the mount/demount head and rim to the right of the head, then rotate the turntable to install it.
    • Return the TPMS to the 180-degree position and set the upper bead onto the mount/demount head with the bead again to the right of the head. Rotate to complete installation.
  • Step 6: Inflate the tire
    • Release the clamps and remove the assembly from the turntable. Attach the inflation system to the valve stem and inflate the tire until both beads are seated (maximum 40 psi/2.76 bar).

Mistakes during the process can cause inefficiencies or equipment and tire damage. Overinflating the tire, for instance, can weaken its integrity, while improper bead positioning can lead to failure.
