Mastering Diagnostics #27: Maximizing Diagnostic Tool Functionality for Faster ROI

Motor Age Technical Editor Brandon Steckler is back for another Mastering Diagnostics episode. Today, Brandon will be discussing the importance of leveraging your diagnostic tooling to extract the most functionality it has to offer. Brandon uses the ADS625X from Bosch to show you how doing this will optimize your return on investment – and swiftly.  Utilizing the tool for much more than just a means to scan DTCs is what it truly means to realize that ROI.

The complaint is that the instrument cluster displays multiple malfunction indicators from several different systems including the powertrain, ABS/TRAC and VTM4 (4WD). Beginning first with an all-module DTC scan offered a sense of direction on which system to focus on and which systems simply indicate malfunctions sympathetically. The engine’s VTEC system (variable valve lift and duration) suffered a malfunction.

The ADS625X offered access to MOTOR service information system, which allowed Brandon to research the DTC for some just-in-time training (right from the driver’s seat). Through bi-directional controls, Brandon was able to leverage System Tests to command VTEC system functionality without having to monitor things during a road test. He easily confirmed that the system was malfunctioning. Learn more about the Bosch ADS 625X.
