Tech Tip: Indicate when lift locks are properly engaged

Sept. 7, 2017
Traditionally, the only way to tell if a lift was on its locks was to push the “down” button. If the lift moved, the locks were not engaged, and only the tech knew for sure.

Technicians should never service a vehicle on a lift that has not been lowered onto its load-holding devices/mechanical locks. It’s a vital safety precaution that sometimes gets overlooked when technicians are hustling. It’s so important, in fact, that OSHA and other health and safety officials will issue citations with fines for every lift they find in use that’s not on its locks.

Traditionally, the only way to tell if a lift was on its locks was to push the “down” button. If the lift moved, the locks were not engaged, and only the tech knew for sure. Rotary Lift’s exclusive LockLight provides one way for technicians, service managers and health/safety inspectors to tell at a glance if a vehicle lift in use is properly resting on its locks. On a hydraulic lift, LockLlight detects when the lift’s hydraulic pressure has been relieved, indicating that the lift is resting on its locks, and activates a bright green light. This beacon visually confirms to the whole shop that the lift is properly lowered to its mechanical locks so work can begin.
