About the Series
What does it take to achieve ASE World Class Technician status? It’s a title earned by passing an exhausting gauntlet of 22 specific ASE certification tests spanning automotive, medium/heavy-duty trucks, collision repair, and advanced diagnostics.
Noah Nelson has spent 25 years in the shop, holding nearly every title from technician to general manager. Today, as the Technical Editor for Motor Age and an ASE Master Automobile Technician holding A1 through A9, he is going back to the testing center to conquer the rest of the board.
The Mountain to Climb
To reach World Class status, Noah is taking on the remaining requirements:
- The T-Series: Medium and Heavy-Duty Truck certifications (kicking off with recent pushes through the T1 and T2 exams).
- The B-Series: Collision Repair and Refinish (specifically targeting the B5 Mechanical & Electrical Components test).
- The L-Series: Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1) and Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist (L2).
Why It Matters
Our industry is changing fast. With vehicles becoming increasingly complex and software-defined, formal certification is a powerful way to validate expertise. This series is designed to show the next generation of technicians that the certification grind is worth the effort.
