Tech Tip: Inconsistencies in torque measurement

Oct. 27, 2016
While torque is an important component of an impact tool’s power, inconsistencies in torque measurement can lead to problems in the shop if technicians don’t have the torque they need for the job.

While torque is an important component of an impact tool’s power, inconsistencies in torque measurement can lead to problems in the shop if technicians don’t have the torque they need for the job. Torque ratings can be confusing because there is no industry standard regulating torque measurement and testing. There are many variables in torque testing that can lead to inconsistencies across manufacturers, including the set time, bolt size and air pressure used. Thus, it’s difficult to compare the torque ratings of different manufacturers. When selecting tools, seek a manufacturer who measures their tools’ torque consistently - the same way, every time.
