Autologic Fix: Lack of power in vehicle

Jan. 28, 2016
The driver reports lack of power and the vehicle enters a limp-home state.

Brand: Land Rover

Models: Disco 3 and Range Rover Sport TDv6, TDv8 engines

Symptom: The driver reports lack of power and the vehicle enters a limp-home state.

Cause: A scan of the engine ECU finds fuel pressure fault code P2290 logged.

Fix: A fuel pressure fault can occur anywhere from the fuel tank all the way forward to the injectors. Here are the steps to take when diagnosing the most common fuel pressure issue:

1. Ignition switched on. With a gauge, measure the fuel pressure at the Schrader valve. Is it between 0.3 to 0.5 bar?

  • If it isn't, go to step 2.
  • If it is, go to step 3.

2. Check if the low pressure pump is running. Check for any restriction in the low pressure supply.

3. Remove the fuel filter and drain into a clear container. Are there any signs of contamination?

  • If there are, go to step 4.
  • If there aren't, go to step 5.

4. Brass contamination may indicate faulty high pressure fuel pump. Other contamination may indicate poor quality fuel or a miss fuel event.

5. Replace the fuel filter and retest the vehicle. Has the problem been rectified?

  • If it has, you have fixed your fault. A very common cause of this fault is the fuel filter being blocked. This is possibly due to lack of servicing or poor fuel quality.
  • If it hasn't, go to step 6.

6. Check the pressure sensor and wiring for corrosion, short circuit and high resistance. Are the pressure sensor and wiring good?

  • If not, rectify any concerns with the sensor or wiring and retest the vehicle.
  • If so, go to step 7.

7. Check the VCV and PCV circuits. Check that the PCV and VCV pins at the ECU are making good contact. Is the pin contact and wiring good?

  • If not, rectify any concerns with the pins and wiring and retest the vehicle.
  • If so, the most likely cause is the high pressure pump, PCV or VCV.
